Two international films and two films by local directors will be screened this month. The two international films are Andrea Arnold’s Wasp, which won this year’s Oscar and Nancy Stein’s multi award winning and breathtaking Stealing Innocence.
Wasp is about 23-year-old Zoe who wants to be wild and free but she’s already got four kids. Wasp takes place on a day when Zoe is broke and her kids are hungry. When Dave, an old flame swings by with the offer of brief release she lies about being a mum and leaves her kids outside the pub.
Nearby late summer wasps are hunting for food around an old rubbish bin. Wasp described by the Guardian as ‘socialist realist film poetry’ has won 31 International Festival Awards including the Academy Award (Oscar) for Short Live Action Film 2005.
Stealing Innocence is a poignant examination of the human cost to the Israeli and Palestinian conflict. Using U.S. television news clips and the personal story of two girls, Rachel and Ayat, the filmmaker captures life in the Occupied Territories where the life of Palestinians is severely restricted.
Stealing Innocence has won the Runner-up Award for Best Short Film Reel Women Film Festival, Best Short Film, best screenplay and best director at the International Student Film Festival, Coveted GOLD Remi Award for Creative Excellence at the World fest International Film Festival, Best Drama Short and Best Supporting Actress at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival.
The two upcoming directors from Hyderabad whose films are also been screened are Poojita Chowdhury, daughter of Union Tourism Minister Renuka Chowdhury and Sini, an actress turned director.
Poojita Chowdhury will be showcasing her film Sand In My Nostrils, a film about the problem of female foeticide in India. Sini will showcase her ‘24 Times 7’, a brief peek into the space of a 13-year-old girl, among million others like her, who has been touched or perhaps affected by the ripples we create. The millions of things we do each day travel like tiny ripples and touch or effect different people in different dimensions.
