Roadmap for all-round development

The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) will be restoring the `full character' of roads, providing for footpaths, draining facility, zebra crossings and road overbridges at identified places where road-widening will be taken up in the coming days.

The MCH Commissioner, Sanjay Jaju, said adequate parking bays would be created and space given for electricity poles that were to be shifted.

Central median

On the Raj Bhavan to Rajiv Gandhi statue road, where widening was taken up two days ago, a central median would be put up.

Mr. Jaju was briefing newsmen on Tuesday after announcing the revival of the City Co-ordination Committee meetings of heads of public utility departments after a gap of more than three years.

The Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), A.K. Khan, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board Managing Director, K.S. Jawahar Reddy, the State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) city Regional Manager, C. Panduranga Murthy, the Central Power Distribution Company Executive Director, A. Srinivas Rao, and other senior officials were present.

Promising better coordination among Government departments, Mr. Jaju said that a coordinated approach was needed to tackle issues relating to the city's development.

These meetings and visits to specific points would be a fortnightly affair from now on, he said, and hoped it would serve as a "clearance mechanism" to sort out common issues of concern.

Blame game

Mr. Khan said revival of the coordination meetings was timely as there was too much of a "blame game" among departments.

Mr. Jawahar Reddy specifically mentioned the issue of his department having to dig the road for laying pipelines. "We will have to come out with some mechanism to ensure that minimum inconvenience is caused to citizens when we go about our work," he said.

The team of senior officials, including the MCH Additional Commissioners - K. Dhanunjaya Reddy (Projects) and N.V.S. Reddy (Traffic & Transport) - went round the Necklace Road to consider steps to improve the traffic snarls near the Prasad's Imax, Rajiv Gandhi statue, the busy Punjagutta-Ameerpet road, Begumpet and Minister's Road, among other places.

The MCH Commissioner said some key roads were identified for re-designing traffic islands and junctions.
