Automatic machine translation

The ministry of information technology and communications is toying with the idea of starting a national technology mission for automatic machine translation (AMT). The area has shown tremendous possibility of growth as with increasing use of computers and the Internet by people with no or little knowledge of the English language, machine translation has become imperative, says Rajiv Sangal, director, International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.

Companies see the huge market which has opened up as a great opportunity. Google, Yahoo and lately Microsoft were among those showing interest in the technology. Another segment which has shown keen interest was that of foreign telecom companies. The growth in the SMS market gives these telecom companies a huge opportunity if they can provide systems in Indian languages.

Indian outfits were quite advanced in research and development in this field. The institutions taking the lead were the International Institute of Information Technology, IIIT, Hyderabad, IIT Kanpur, C-Dac, Pune, KBC centre of Anna University, Chennai and IIT-Bombay.
