Boost for security after attack

Vital scientific and defense installations across India were put under heavy security Thursday. The stepped-up precautions followed Wednesday's suspected terrorist attack at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in which a scientist was killed and four others injured.

The Indian Space Research Organization has sounded a red alert at all its institutions. Security was beefed up at the space agency's headquarters in Bangalore after the attack. It was also tightened at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center in Mumbai, which houses India's nuclear research assets, and IIT in suburban Powai, the Press Trust of India reported. In Hyderabad, where Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to inaugurate the 93rd Indian Science Congress on Jan. 3, security forces have been put on extra alert, PTI said.

Additional forces have been stationed at all scientific institutions, national laboratories and vital installations across India. Quick reaction teams have been stationed at vital defense installations in Bangalore, including Hindustan Aeronautics, Yelahanka Airport and the Aircraft Development Agency.
