The victim, whose name is being withheld on request, is a first semester student of computer science from Hyderabad, India and is recovering well. John Daley, spokesperson for the university, says that incidents have been reported off campus, but this is the first such incident on campus in more than four years.
The university won the Jeanne Clery campus safety award in 2003 for the Personal Alarm Device that every student and faculty member is provided. On pressing a button on the PAD, the security office is signaled with the name and location of the person requiring assistance, and a light nearest the location of the PAD goes on. Security also responds to the call and arrives at the location.
