Cleaning the uncleanable

The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad is planning to scout for a boat to clear garbage from the Hussainsagar after the Government asked it to take up the basic cleaning work of the lake and the foreshore area.

Maximum garbage comes from Kukatpally feeder channel. Yet, they insist the lake is cleaner after diversion of domestic sewer lines and treatment of 20 million litres daily.

MCH officials say they might buy an 8x20 feet motorboat to collect floating debris. The boat could be procured either from Visakhapatnam or Kakinada after modalities are finalised with the HUDA and the Buddha Purnima Project Authority. The civic body now plans to put in place at least two and half units for sweeping and lifting garbage for the 12 kilometre-circumference around the lake and near Minister's Road. Around 40 workers will be involved in the exercise once contracts for fresh units are given.

Sanitation contracts are usually for seven months and monthly costs could be about Rs.3 lakh. MCH generally takes care of cleanliness around the lake only during special occasions. If the contracts are through, the process will be round the year. MCH and BPPA officials say that maximum garbage comes from Kukatpally feeder channel.
