An Animation Academy?

NASSCOM has cautioned the animation and gaming industry in the country of having to face moderate to acute shortage of human resources if remedial steps are not taken in right earnest.

The animation industry has a potential in excess of US $ 1 billion and is poised to reach US $ 869 million by 2010, with a compounded annual growth rate of 25 per cent over 2006-10.

IT Secretary K. Ratna Prabha announced that the Government had, in principle, agreed to allot five acres of land to NASSCOM for locating its office in the city, while it was prepared to allot a piece of land to create an animation and gaming academy. The proposal was pending for over a year but the shortage of trained manpower in animation put the project on the back burner.

She said that a tripartite agreement among the NASSCOM, the state government and the Industry should be reached for setting up the academy. There was a need for the think-tank to finalise the modalities for incorporating gaming and animation in the ICT policy of the State.

The animation industry has a potential in excess of US $ 1 billion and is poised to reach US $ 869 million by 2010, with a compounded annual growth rate of 25 per cent over 2006-10. The gaming industry, on its part, has a potential of US $ 732 million, but it might get restricted to US $ 424 million if the country is unable to capitalise on the opportunity early. The Indian gaming industry was estimated at close to US $ 48 million in 2006 and was expected to register 72 per cent compounded annual growth rate till 2010.

Explaining the highlights of the report, NASSCOM president Kiran Karnik said the country required a policy framework that would provide for certain incentives and a common support infrastructure for beginners that could help accelerate the sector's growth.
