The city would soon add another top educational institution in its map if plans of the Atlanta-based Georgia Institute of Technology, popularly known as Georgia Tech, fructify.
The team was looking for a 200-acre place near to the city. The Bibinagar stretch in Nalgonda district and Choutuppal route, are the locations being considered.
The university plans to establish its campus near the city and it would be the only physical campus outside the US if it actually takes shape. A team from the institute scouted for a suitable place in Ranga Reddy district and also visited a few places in Mahabubnagar district near the upcoming International Airport on Tuesday.The team included Bhaskar, an NRI from the university. Mahabubnagar Collector Usha Rani also accompanied the team. Sources said the team was looking for a 200-acre place and it would search for other suitable locations in neighbouring districts, but near to the city. The Bibinagar stretch in Nalgonda district and Choutuppal route, where ample land is available, are other locations being considered.
The proposal to establish the university campus emerged last March itself but somehow it did not progress due to delay in the Central Government's decision on the establishment of foreign universities in the country. According to sources, the idea of expanding academic horizons to India emerged when President Abdul Kalam launched the Indo-US University Network in December 2005.
The growth of Hyderabad in the IT sector and the talent pool available here are said to be the reasons for choosing the city. Another contributing factor is that nearly 40 per cent of students at Georgia Tech are of Indian origin. The institute would be truly international since it would admit students not only from India but also around the world.
