Built to be destroyed
Hyderabad is one of the sought after cities for education in engineering but the seven blunders that have come up in the city in the last one-year, built by the municipal corporation are perhaps reason to wonder.
Sudden brakes have been applied on PV Narasimha Rao Expressway because the municipal authorities just realised that the foot over bridge, hardly a year old, comes in the way. So Rs one crore project will be brought down.
“What goes for them? It’s public money anyway. They blocked traffic for six months to erect it, now they will block traffic again to demolish it,” is the view echoed by many people.
“Couldn’t our civil engineers do a little bit of planning? This is utter inconvenience.”
Of the seven ’sky walks’ constructed by the Hyderabad municipal corporation in the last one year with a budget of Rs seven crore, five will have to be brought down because it obstructs the metro rail lines which will be laid soon. Authorities admit that they are a result of lack of co-ordination and planning.
“From now we are consulting both the traffic police as well as the metro rail authorities before finalising locations for the foot over bridges that will come up in future,” said Dr Vani Mohan, Additional Commissioner, GHMC.
The bridge that connects the left and right of Begumpet area has an empty look even during peak hour. Pedestrians say the point at which it is located is not apt so is hardly used. Same is the case with the bridge that is hardly a kilometer away.
