City gets extra security
The city’s security set-up got a shot in the arm with special police officers (SPOs) taking over surveillance at strategic places.
The recently recruited SPOs, ex-servicemen, have been posted at sensitive places in the city, some operating in mufti.
As many as 419 ex-servicemen were inducted into the city police force by the government on Monday. They were equally distributed among all zones in the city, while some were placed at the disposal of the City Security Wing (CSW).
“They will perform anti-sabotage tasks including frisking and will have access control at key places,” additional commissioner of police (coordination) N V Surendra Babu told ‘TOI’ on Wednesday.
The Central Zone got 60 special police officers who were all placed at sensitive spots. “They have been placed at Imax, NTR Gardens, Necklace Road, Lumbini Park, shopping malls in Abids and cinema halls,” DCP, Central Zone, Mohammed Iqbal said.
“Some of them will be in uniform, while some in mufti,” Iqbal added. Police placed 15 officers at Lumbini Park, the site of terror attack last August.
The additional commissioner (coordination) said 585 more officers would join the police force by January-end.
