GVK Tennis Academy, set up by the GVK Foundation as a non-profitable and non-commercial centre, was formally inaugurated at Jubilee Hills on Thursday by C.V.S.K. Sarma, Commissioner & Special Officer, GHMC, with a promise that it would cater to the needs of the under-privileged sections of the society.

Speaking on the occasion, G. V. Krishna Reddy, chairman of GVK Group of Industries, said that the idea of setting up the Academy was to see that the State produced many more Sania Mirzas. “We believe in the talent being given the right kind of encouragement at the appropriate time. Many in the tennis circles acknowledge the fact how we spotted Sania Mirza when she was just eight years of age.

Sponsored by the GVK Group, she is now one of the world’s best players,” he said. “This Academy will definitely take care of young talent amongst the under-privileged classes too. We are in the process of finalising a separate nominal fee structure for this category for we believe that there is plenty of talent in this strata of the society too,” Krishna Reddy explained.

The chairman of GVK Group also thanked the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation for extending its cooperation by letting out the playfield (opposite to the Jubilee Hills International Centre) for the Academy.

Former national player Ilyas Ghouse, who will be the Director of the Academy with four courts to start with, said that the coaching would be on scientific methods and at affordable fee-structure to lure as many youngsters as possible to the Academy. He reminded that GVK Group was already sponsoring 24 talented tennis players to the tune of Rs. 2 crores per annum.

B. S. Krishna Reddy, president of AP Seniors Tennis Association, hoped that the GVK Academy would usher in a new chapter as Mr. Krishna Reddy was known for his meticulous planning and stickler to norms.
