Hussain sagar pollution free by 2010

In what could bring smiles to the residents of twin cities and hundreds of thousands of tourists alike, some French and US companies are all set to be part of a project to restore the glory of Hussainsagar.

The existence of the highly-polluted lake is in danger due to unmindful discharge of industrial effluents.

Two French companies Degremont and Viola and a US company Ionexchange have been shortlisted among 12 other companies to construct a 30 MLD water treatment plant at a cost of Rs 90 crore.

Two French companies Degremont and Viola and a US company Ionexchange have been shortlisted among 12 other companies to construct a 30 MLD water treatment plant at a cost of Rs 90 crore. The plant is a vital part of the project, which is being funded with Rs 300 crore aid by Japan Bank for International Co-operation. Officials of Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (Huda) said selection of the company would be finalised soon and work will begin within a month.

“The plant will be ready by 2010 and will make Hussainsagar free from pollution. Simultaneously, dredging and desilting of the lake bed will be taken up as part of the revival plan,” said Mr Jayesh Ranjan, Huda vice-chairman. On Monday, Huda organised a workshop with all the stake-holders such as the GHMC, water board, irrigation and NGOs and sought their suggestions while explaining the progress of the scheme.

Minister for urban development, Mr Koneru Ranga Rao, who inaugurated the workshop, said the government would give utmost priority for the development of catchment areas of the lake.

“A single government agency has to deal with all the subjects related to Hussaiansagar. Otherwise, it will lead to the delay in implementation of the project,” said Mr M. Vedakumar, president of Forum for Better Hyderabad.
