JNTU trifurcation move

JNTU

The brand Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) is all set to lose its sheen. At least that is what the opinion of its students is, with the proposed trifurcation of the university as announced by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy recently.

Dr. Reddy announced that JNTU, which had become synonymous with the success of software professionals in the United States and other parts of the world, would be trifurcated for establishing ‘JNTU South’ at Anantapur and ‘JNTU East’ at Kakinada for administrative convenience.

Sources said trifurcation means there would be three different universities and three different Vice-Chancellors.

Nearly 900 colleges are affiliated to the JNTU as of now with a majority being engineering while the remaining are MCA, MBA and Architecture colleges.

Students’ fears

Students are now wondering if their degree certificates will have the JNTU name alone or come along with suffixes like “South” and “East”. Officials themselves don’t have a clear idea about what kind of certificate the students would get if trifurcation takes shape.

A senior official of the A.P. State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) said students would continue to get the JNTU certificate despite the division. “It is still not clear but the modalities would be worked out soon,” he maintained.

Anna varsity model

The idea of division is apparently taken from Anna University in Madras that has a centre in Trichy and other areas.

The JNTU name had become an issue earlier also when colleges in some districts in Telangana were shifted from Osmania University to the newly formed Telangana University. Students feared they could lose out on the brand name.

Senior academics of JNTU believe that if the university is divided, the certificates would have to carry the new names.
Smooth admissions

However, students feel the JNTU brand name ensures smooth admissions in the United States for higher education apart from getting good weightage during job interviews.

“In fact, students under JNTU Anantapur and Kakinada would be at disadvantage.

Given Hyderabad’s image on the global map, students from JNTU Hyderabad would have the natural advantage,” feels Arun, a B.Tech student from Sri Indu Engineering College.

One Response to “JNTU trifurcation move”

  1. Hi, I was the very first batch student from JNTU, Ananthapur for the MCA batch(1997). Wanted to write my review on trifurcation of JNTU. As a close look trifurcation sounds very good for administrative convenience purpose, but there are lot of ( more in percentage ) things which can be conveniently achieved, cannot be overlooked by trifurcating . Though it is trifurcated, but a head body should be established to control/manage and administor the working functionality of these three individual JNTUs. So that common goal would remain same and centralized. This gives better centralized approach to achieve its goals with constructive manner. And also JNTU brand name remains same for all the students.

Some advantages by having a head body…

    1. JNTU brand name remains same.
    2. More centralized curriculum will be established.
    3. Better admission procedure can be thought and provided to all parts of state students.
    4. Better teaching staff and/or facilities can be shared/provided without much difficulty with current trend of internet world.
    5. Better and healthy competition would be provided to both staff and students.
    6. We can have centralized library ( may be online/offline )so that every one will have access to all the resource available at any point of time.

If I go like this, I can think of numerous advantages…

    Thanks and Regards,
    Srinivas Reddy Annadi
