Opposition for Metro Rail

The Twin Cities Traders Welfare Federation has decided to vehemently oppose land acquisition for road widening in the Metro Rail project.

The federation, which represents some 10,000 traders to be affected by road widening, will start protests from January 6 to demand that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation come up with a comprehensive compensation and rehabilitation package.

The traders expressed serious concern over the land acquisition process at an emergency meeting at the City Central Library hall at Ashok Nagar on Sunday. The leaders of the federation said that over one lakh employees will be seriously affected and demanded that GHMC announce a compensation package immediately.

“We have made representations to all the ministers and GHMC officials concerned. So far, there has been no response from them on the compensation package. We will organise a hunger strike on January 6 and later intensify the struggle with rasta rokos and bandhs,” said K. Kesava Rao, president of the federation.

The federation demanded that alternate space be provided in the Metro Rail stations where shopping malls have been proposed to make the project financially viable. Many traders said they would not be able to repay bank loans and other debts if their establishments are demolished.

However, the Hyderabad Metro Rail officials said they are minimising land acquisition so the project could be completed as per the schedule. “We are ready to negotiate with the traders and find solutions. They don’t need to fear since we are redesigning all the Metro Rail stations to minimise land use. As per the new plan, stations will not need roads more than 100 metres wide,” said Hyderabad Metro Rail managing director, N.V.S. Reddy.
