Pollution solution : Holidays

The city is in holiday mood. Large numbers of people have left for their native villages to celebrate Sankranti and those staying back are enjoying drives and strolls along uncluttered roads.

“APSRTC is running 3,755 buses and have shipped about 10 lakh people from the city in the last five days, and another 10 lakh have caught trains, planes and cabs to get away”

The city folk have been making plans well in advance for the holiday spree that started from the second Saturday and will end this Sunday. Bhogi, Makara Sankranti, Kanuma and Muharrum fall this week. Out of four lakh cars registered in the city, at least one lakh have left, bringing down air pollution in all major junctions.

The total suspended particulate matter, which indicates the level of air pollution, has come down from 326 micrograms per metre cube (MGMC) to 279 mgmc in Abids.  In Punjagutta it dipped to 321 from the usual 347 and at Paradise junction it reached 309 from the usual 337 mgmc in the last two days. Also, there has been no traffic congestion in usually busy areas such as Hitech City road, and the Khairatabad- Ameerpet- Kukatpally and Begumpet-Secunderabad stretches.

Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills and Mehdipatnam roads also have little traffic. APSRTC is running 3,755 buses and have shipped about 10 lakh people from the city in the last five days, and another 10 lakh have caught trains, planes and cabs to get away from the hurly burly.
