Sania will not play in India
Hurt by the recent controversies surrounding her, India’s top-ranked tennis star Sania Mirza has decided not to play in India.
She has pulled out of the WTA Tier II tournament Bangalore Open, scheduled to be held from March 3 to 9.
Talking to the media here on Monday on her return from Australia, 21-year-old Sania said she was advised by her manager not to play in Bangalore.
“I’m not playing in the Bangalore Open. I have been advised by my manager not to play (there) because a lot has been happening in the past few months. Everytime I have played in India, there has been some kind of problem. So we just thought it was better not to play this time,” she added.
Controversies — from the shooting of a commercial at the Mecca Masjid to the National Flag incident — have been stalking the Indian star.
Sania, who suffered a hamstring injury during the Australian Open, said she would be out of action for two to three weeks.
