Speed governors compulsory

Nearly 7.5 lakh vehicles, under different categories from four wheelers to heavy vehicles, in the state will have to have speed governors by March 1.

Otherwise, the vehicles will not be allowed to ply on roads.

The government had issued a GO last week making speed governors mandatory for school buses, maxi-cabs, cabs, trucks and tourist buses.

Based on the GO MS No. 362, transport commissioner Poonam Malkondaiah on Tuesday issued a notice for implementing the rule from March 1.

Installation of speed governors was made compulsory in school buses, maxi cabs and heavy vehicles in Hyderabad, Cyberabad, Nalgonda and Chittoor districts through GO 239 issued in January.

The high court stayed the implementation of the GO after vehicle owners filed a writ petition against it.

“A high court division bench vacated the stay in October, 2007, keeping in view the safety on the roads,” joint transport commissioner (planning) C L N Gandhi told TOI.

The speed governors would be available in the price range of Rs 8,000-18,000 and limits speed to 65 kilometres per hour.

“Vehicles will not be allowed to ply without a speed governor after March 1,” Gandhi added.
