US Secretary of Health in city
US Secretary of Health and Human Services Micheal O Leavitt will meet Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Tuesday to discuss the Rajiv Aarogya Sri health insurance scheme being implemented in eight districts and other issues relating to health sector.
Reviewing the Rajiv Aaryogya Sri scheme with officials here, Dr. Reddy said it was a unique programme and not being implemented elsewhere in the country. Planning Commission’s deputy Chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia desired to study it and wanted senior officials to be sent to New Delhi. “But it has now crossed the country’s borders and attracted American government’s attention”, he added. The Chief Minister also reviewed the possibility of seeking assistance from national and international agencies for the scheme, a press release said.
Stating that Aarogya Sri was a boon to the poor with white ration cards, the Chief Minister asked the officials to ensure that all 1.82 crore beneficiaries received health cards by October 2008 when the scheme would extend to the entire State.
